Old Guys in Action and The Bamboo Bicycle Expedition of 2022

During the summer months of this year, Ross Weaver and Bernie Potvin from the not-for-profit organization Old Guys in Action, will be continuing their cross Canada bike ride. However, this ride will be unlike the many trans Canada rides that have gone before them. Much of this expedition will take place on bicycles made from bamboo.

The point of this ride is to raise awareness and funding for children living with disabilities in Uganda, East Africa. Most of the children who will benefit from the enormous effort, and courage, of Ross and Bernie live in extreme poverty. These children are also challenged with a life-altering disability and many require the daily use of wheelchairs over rugged terrain.

Ross and Bernie’s Bamboo Bicycle Expedition will enable the Embrace International Foundation (Embrace) to partner with a Ugandan charity and construct high quality wheelchairs made with bamboo frames. This bamboo wheelchair initiative will enable Ugandan tradespeople to manufacture a wonderful resource for special needs children using local materials and significantly reduce the cost of providing a special needs child with the gift of mobility.

All pledges made in support of Ross and Bernie’s bamboo bike ride will be tax receipted by Embrace and allocated for wheelchairs, walkers, crutches and other mobility aids for Ugandan children living with disabilities.

Pledges can be made on a kilometre by kilometre basis, or simply as a one-time gift. Alternatively, a donor may wish to make a contribution towards the ride by giving for the Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec or Maritime portions of the expedition. No gift is too small and all gifts over $25 will be tax receipted.

*Ross and Bernie began their epic ride in White Rock, BC in October of last year. They braved snow, ice and cold temperatures before being forced to stop the ride in Calgary. Now that spring has finally arrived in most of Canada, the ride continues.
